Submissions are currently OPEN for work to be published exclusively online at Epiphany. Everyone who submits work for online publication will receive a complimentary digital subscription to Epiphany, available as a link in our initial submission response email.

We hope that when you read Epiphany, you'll get a sense of the great variety of stories, poems, essays, and genre-bending work that we like, and the recurring themes to which we keep returning. We hope that you'll enjoy and connect with the work of your fellow writers, and that you'll feel you're a valued part of our community, rather than just another lonely writer sending your beloved work out into some unsympathetic void.  We hope you'll see what makes us different. We hope you'll feel you have a stake in our endeavor.

Submissions are currently CLOSED for the print issue, for the Fresh Voices Fellowship, and for the Breakout! Prize. Digital subscriptions are available here, which includes access to the current issue. The digital issue is available as .epub, .mobi, and .pdf.

Join our mailing list to keep updated on submission period news.

The Fresh Voices Fellowship supports one emerging Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, or other writer of color who does not have an MFA in creative writing nor an advanced English degree (MA, PhD), and is not currently enrolled in a degree-granting program.

One writer, in prose or poetry, will receive:

  • A $2000 stipend
  • Publication in a print issue of Epiphany
  • A one-year subscription to Epiphany
  • The opportunity to participate in the editorial and publication process of a small non-profit literary magazine, and to build close relationships with the editorial team during the course of a twelve-month fellowship
  • A Q&A to be published on Epiphany’s website

We encourage writers who work outside the traditional literary and academic systems to apply, and applicants must not have an advanced degree in English, creative writing, or other related fields, and must not be enrolled at the time of application in any degree-granting program. Applicants also must not have published or be contracted to publish a book.

Work Sample: Please include a 5-page sample (double-spaced for prose) of previously unpublished work that you feel most represents you, your interests, and your literary style. (If you’re sending a novel excerpt, please include a short synopsis of the novel and an explanation of where, in the story, the excerpt falls.)

We are also offering everyone who applies to the Fresh Voices Fellowship a free digital subscription to Epiphany. If you apply for the fellowship, the code for a free digital subscription will be included in our initial response letter.

There is no fee for applications to the Fresh Voices Fellowship.

A short story doesn't have to be long to break your heart or change your life. We are looking to publish devastating short fiction, a thousand words or less in any category or genre, that can be read in one giant gulp.

The name of Epiphany magazine derives from the Joycean idea that an epiphany is the moment when “the soul of the commonest object… seems to us radiant.” Like the semicolon in our logo, an epiphany is a pause in time followed by a shift in thinking. Like the semicolon, an epiphany can consist of a confluence between two ideas. Like the semicolon, an epiphany is both a part of language and outside of it.

1. Submit one piece at a time.
2. Format in 12-pt font, double-spaced.
3. 1000 words or less.
4.  Tell us if you're submitting simultaneously to other publications (and please withdraw promptly through Submittable should your work be accepted elsewhere).
5. We only consider previously unpublished work.
6. Please include your name, title, and word count on the first page of the submitted file.

We pay $25 for flash fiction that we publish online.

Discounted 1-year subscriptions ($20) are available upon submission, as an add-on item at the payment stage.

During this submissions period, we are offering everyone who sends us work a free digital subscription to Epiphany. If you submit work to us, the code for a free digital subscription will be included in our initial response letter.
